Such people are very small minority. But they make the headlines and speaking tours because the change in their lives is so drastic.
Most Christian come to know Jesus at an early age and because of His strength in their lives, do not turn to "a life of drugs/alcohol/adultery/crime".
They have much better things to do which will not hurt them.

Most of these people have a long life enjoying themselves and not caring about the consequences of what they are doing. They start getting old and realise they are going to die a very painful death in the Gutter if they dont do something about there lifestyle. They are being Hypocrites and start praying and going to Church when they are getting old ,and they start dictating to everybody else about right and wrong. There is nothing wrong in that just that they had there Cake and enjoyed it and start getting Holyier than everybody else when they know they have passed it and start wondering where they are going to go when they Die.

Bro, I used to sell marijuana and cocaine, I was around alot of not very good people. I even pistol-whipped a guy after home-invading him because he tried to rob me. Getting that perspective and seeing the mercy of God guiding us to the straight path after we were so far astray is a sign of his kindness. I am at true follower of Islam now. I am always grateful that God saved me from that life, for I surely would have end up dead or in jail. But now by the mercy of God I am a first year University student in Sciences. I left all those bad ways, and those people even though I know they are still doing it and still making lots of illegal money. This is where Religion exceeds Capitalism.
Peace Be With You

MUAHAHAAAA you've found the answer to "Why is religion so popular?" I often see a bumpersticker that drives me nuts: "Christians aren't perfect, just forgiven". Sadly, many who claim to follow various religions do so because of the whole "I'm forgiven no matter what I do" idea. That's, of course, not the way it truly works... but what do they care.
Hoorah for people who think like you do - live your life being the best person you can, doing your best for your surroundings and your fellow man. The world could use more of these kinds of people, and less of the pseudo-religious types.
There are no perfect men... only perfect intentions. It it my belief that if any judges us, it will be on what we intended to do with our actions, rather than how we failed.

All the christians I meet seem to be judgemental. Well I can just add to my list here. God is perfect, not you. You HAVE made mistakes and should be aware of them. God said everyone sins, so you HAVE been the bad guy every once in a 'great' while. It's not the bad things you do, Its how you react to them. If you plead for forgiveness, and mean it, you should be forgiven. God says he forgives anyone and everybody, its that you learn from your mistakes that count.

From what I've heard it's very simple really....
for people who have always had God in their lives it's not something to announce because it's always been a given....like breathing
for people who've "found God" after living a confusing life it's an Epiphany....like drowning and coming up for air.

There are two ways to get right with God. You can earn it, or you can receive the gift of righteousness.
The testimony of Scripture is, that the only one who ever earned it was Jesus Christ.
"Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.
The Pharisee stood and was praying thus to himself."God, I thank you that I am not like other people; swindlers, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I pay tithes of all that I get."
But the tax collector, standing some distance away, was unwilling to lift up his eyes to heaven, but was beating his breast saying "God, be merciful to me, the sinner!"
I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted." (Luke 18:10-14)

Lots of people emerge from their teenage years without any moral direction or spiritual underpinnings, and decide that the way to happiness and fulfillment in life is to indulge one's sensual nature. So they drink and/or use drugs, sleep around, and otherwise chase extremes in sensation/adrenalization. Some of them crash and burn: become addicts, contract diseases, end up incarcerated, etc., and come to the realization that that lifestyle is not fulfilling, nor is it making them happy. As they continue to search for meaning in their lives, they find God.
They then go out to schools to tell young people not to waste their lives taking the risks they did, following a path that isn't going to make them happy, but to cut directly to the chase and accept Jesus as Lord and Savior. Could they chose to watch while young people replicate the errors that they committed? Yes, they could. But the love of God compells them not to.
