OMG!!! THAT HAPPENED TO ME!! around a year and a half ago, i bought a kitten and it went outside at night....i know that there are racoons in my backyard because i've always seen them and my backyard is really big...one unexpected night, my cat went outside (the back door was open) and then we didnt notice so we just closed the door after it went outside...and then around 4:30 in the morning, when everyone was sleeping, i heard a really really loud meowing noise outside (my room is just at the front door) but i thought my cat was just playing around so i went back to sleep (and i didnt go and check up on it coz i was scared. really scared..i thought it saw a ghost or sumthing..) and then my whole family woke up and said they heard a really loud noise and we began searching outside. then i saw alot of poo outside (the front and back door) and i knew my kitten was gone... >.< and she didnt come back.....
-i know how you feel....at least i got a new kitten now :)

Coyotes are generally carrion eaters but will attack small prey if given an opportunity. But don't give up hope. Are you sure they were eaten? Cats are very intelligent animals and if you didn't let them in they may have gone into hiding somewhere outside, like in your warm engine compartment or under a porch. For future reference, coyotes are not like wolves. They are much smaller and they are scared of people. I was changing my tire once and noticed halfway through that one had sat down thirty feet behind me and was watching me. I talked to him for a few minutes before he yapped and walked away. They are less dangerous to humans than your neighbors french poodle. Hope your cats are okay. If they were really scared, they may not come back for a day or two. Keep and eye out.

Sorry for your loss. Before you get more cats you should get an outside dog. The scent of another canine on your property will keep the coyotes away from your immediate vicinity. After the dog is comfortable with its new situation, introduce new cats one or two at a time and everyone will get along just fine.

The coyotes would have taken off if you opened the door.
If you get more cats, build them a "Save Haven". We used several bales of hay piled 2 high and made a big block, then piled bales around the edge of the block with a small opening (Cat sized) and put more bales on top. The coyotes couldn't get them and we always knew where the cats would be if the yotes came around!

I heard that if you have pets and you know that there are coyotes around your home, don't let them out at night alone, even if you have dogs. And I also heard that coyotes are scared of humans. They won't come too close. Those poor kitties, I dont know what I would do if my Taz got eaten :(

For one you can get free cats anywhere. And yes you should have just walked outside and I can assure you they would have hauled butt. We have coyotes all over in Iowa and they are very afraid of people. They are not like bobcats where people are afraid of them. Sorry that you let your cats be killed.

Coyotes are very shy of people. If you would have opened the door, they would have probably run away.

This is a very good example of why you should ALWAYS KEEP YOUR PET INSIDE!!!
I hope you learned your lesson and you don't allow your pet to roam outside where there are too many dangers for them to live a good life.
