I can only speak from my personal experience -- in the Army, when I was assigned to Europe, I served a three-year tour. Tours to places like Korea, for example, are hardship tours. This means that wives and children cannot be taken along. Those tours last only one year.

It depends on the branch you're in. For the Navy, an overseas assignment for a single person is 12 - 18 months, normally. For a married person who is taking family, it is 2 - 3 years with the possibility of an extension if you really like the command. I did 3 1/2 years in Japan and 3 1/2 years in Sardinia (USN). If you're on a ship and it deploys, it's usually 6 months. I remember the NINE MONTH cruises. I have been gone for 13 and 12 months unaccompanied. Once was to Antarctica and once to the flag ship for the Middle East Forces. I have also done a 6 month deployment on the USS Nimitz just before I retired. My first overseas duty was in Viet Nam for 1 year.

It depends on where you go. If you mean Iraq or Afghanistan, it is usually around a year. Anytime over a year and you are entitiled to extra money each month on top of the extra pay you earn and they don't like to do that. If it is Korea, it can be 12 -16 months I believe (my husband only did a year almost to the day) but many single soldiers opt to extend for longer periods. Married soldiers don't because for the most part, they are not allowed to bring families with them. If you mean Germany or somewhere like that it is generally 3 years because this is a permanent duty station that family is able to move to. So some of this can depend on if your single or have dependents. If you have school age children you can put in for stabilization in places like Germany and can stay is such places up to 7-10 years, but the stabilizaion may be more for permanant duty stations located inside the U.S.

I'm in the Navy so it's a little different. In theory you do one six month deployment every 18 months. That's for sea duty (ship board duty). I think the Air Navy and Sea Bee's do it different. The down side is you have to go to sea pretty regular to get ready for a deployment. On average during six years of sea duty I spent 7 months a year away from home. In 2004 I was home a total of 92 days broken up through out the year. It all depends on operational commitments.

When I was in the Navy, it was an AVERAGE of 6 months out of the year during a sea-tour.
Then again, I got screwed by schedules, accidents, and Desert Shield/Storm... did a 4 month cruise, and went right back out for a 6 month deployment to Japan that turned into a 10 month deployment...

A short tour-Korea- is one year
A long tour-Germany-is two years if you are single or dont bring your family, and three if you bring family
Deployments to a combat zone-The Army sends most units for about one year
The Marines send them for 7 months
The Air Force uses a 120 day rotation

when you are in the reserves, you don't get stationed overseas. you are in your own state where you report one weekend a month, and 2 weeks a year. you can be deployed, or go to germany for training for a couple of weeks. deployments vary, but typically for army reserves it's a year.

It is great to be in uniform and serve ones country.
I remained in uniform from 1973 to 2000 in Corps of Engineers.
What a lovely time, all the way, it has been.
Enjoyed each bit of it and still cherish the days spent in uniform.

My fiance served 4 mos in Iraq, 9 in Afghanistan. One of my friends served 7 mos. in Iraq and my fiance's brother is currently serving a 5 month deployment in Iraq...so it's been a different amount of time for each of them.
