For generations people have been leaving butter out of the refrigerator but with the smaller families today it isn't the best idea. It doesn't take long before it gets rancid.

The solution I found is called a Butter Bell. It seals the butter and the water keeps it from getting rancid, for up to three weeks. It stays nice, soft and spreadable. I call it a win/win. You can purchase them on-line or at any kitchen shop. We got ours at a full-line hardware store...

The site tells you all about it...

You can leave it on the counter for a day or 2, but for health reasons its best to keep it refirigerated.

I leave mine out. I hate trying to scrape or chop hard cold butter when I make toast!

I've always left mine on the counter. As long as it's covered it should be ok.

We leave our butter in the cupboard. I would see no problem with it.
