Meditation, exercise, group therapy with other sufferers, listening to uplifting music, regular sessions with a certified counselor.

Me's answer below is excellent. Thank you, Me, for encouraging your fellow Christians to not be afraid or too proud to include medication among the tools they use to get control of what is a medical condition.

One way to affect your body chemistry in a positive way without medicine is through exercise and healthy eating. I know it sounds over-said, but adding exercise of almost any kind to your day, 30 min+ can make a big difference, especially if you are eating well too... energy and other benefits from exercise all help encourage the mind and body out of thinking and feeling depressed

Another way might be to journal (which is basically like writing a letter to yourself or to some unknown other to whom you can say anything). Sometimes free writing, just writing whatever comes to mind can help you find sources of your depression. Or write letters to people that come to mind as possibly being tied in with your depression, even if you never plan to send them...you never know what might come out as you write.

Following your passions can help allieviate your depression because you will begin to focus on contructive or exciting things, instead of feeling stuck inside saddness and low energy.

Finding someone you can confide in and having a conversation where you can speak freely and openly (without worrying about offending someone) can mean everything when you are feeling depressed. Sometimes that can be a friend or family member, other times a good counselor..some counselor's will want to prescribe medicine, but you don't have to take it. Try to find a counselor who wants more than anything to listen and be of service..

I would recommend a few books to you as well:
The Beast by Tracy Thompson
Reinventing your Life ( a psychological self-examination book)
Care of the Soul by Thomas Moore
and the last one I wanted to mention I can't find at the moment, I think it is called The Big Picture

For me, couseling helped a ton. I was actually on medicine for a while and it really did help and it didn't make me feel unlike myself or anything (besides being happier) and it hasn't been hard for me to get off either. I'm a 16 year old Christian girl who dealt and is still dealing with depression. Also visiting your doctor is good, doctors usually make people a bit nervous, but they are helpful with knowing if medicine is good for you or not. And the mainthing, just pray that God will free you of this burden and put it all in His hands.

Regular exercise, sunlight, proper diet, sleep, journalling. If these things don't work, do not be ashamed to go to the doctor and ask for anti-depressants. Christians get depressed too, we're humans in human bodies. Peace :-)

The Word of God declares that Jesus is our Wonderful Counselor... Lasting peace and freedom from depression comes from understanding who we are as God's Children, created in His image and for His pleasure. This cannot be know but by those who have become "born again", cleansed of our sin, and rebellion against God's mandates through the blood of Christ Jesus. When we repent of our sin, and ask Christ to forgive us and we submit to His Lordship of our lives, we become a "new creation". If you have not done this, I implore you to seek God's mercy at once, if you have, then spend lots of time reading the Bible (a good place to read may be Psalms, Proverbs, and John's Gospel). Other elements of recovery from depression may include friends to lean on, support group (Bible study group), prayer, fasting, and one very important key is to do a self examination to see if there are any areas of sin in your life that need to be surrendered to the Lord. Sin will give Satan a foothold in your life and can rob you of peace and joy. Trust in God's grace to give you the strength to walk in righteousness and peace and joy will follow. God Bless!

It depends on what is causing the depression. If it is a chemical imbalance then medicine is your only hope. If it is caused by your surroundings, then you can change your surroundings or depend on God to help you live with it.

I don't know the answer but you are a smart man, if only I could get the rest of America (assuming that's where you live) to realize how unnecessary and destructive medication can be

This will help with your self image.

good luck

Counselling can be effective. Ideal to undergo counselling while taking anti-depressants tho.
