Before the aircraft makes the emergency landing, the lead flight attendant communicates with the cockpit crew to know what their intentions & procedures for the situation (i.e. - when the cockpit crew will notify for the cabin crew & passengers to get ready for the "brace position").

The flight attendants will brief the passengers sitting in the emergency exit rows what to do after the aircraft crashes (opening & removing the emergency exit windows and assisting other passengers out of the aircraft).

The flight attendants will ask any volunteering passengers nearest to the exit, after they go down the emergency slide, to assist other passengers to get away from the plane.

The flight attendants will be the first to get out of their seats and assess the situation and check the window in the doors to make sure there isn't a fire near the exit then open the door. They will direct the passengers through those exit. If there is a fire near the exit, they will shout that the exit is blocked and redirect the passengers to other exits.

It is due to the flight attendant training that there was no fatalities when Air Canada Airbus A340 overran the runway in Toronto.

Flight attendants are trained to be extremely flexible so they can demonstrate the pre-crash position: Put your head as far between your knees as possible, pull your chin in as far as possible.......pucker up, and kiss your A** Goodbye

hmm... on the crash itself, they would most probably not be able to do anything...

One of the training includes prepping all the passengers to "get-ready-to-crash" positions and to wear their life vests...

another is swimming, in their uniforms... sounds weird, but it is true. and it is tough. so behind those good looking faces, should be a strong-willed person :)
