Have something to talk about.

Don't just go up to a girl and say hello; have a specific thing you want to say, like a compliment or asking her a question, then say it. Based on her reaction, it'll be pretty clear if she wants to keep talking or not. If not, walk away, having said the thing you wanted to say.

But what if it's obvious she wants to keep talking, but you have nothing to talk about? Well, that's not breaking the ice; that's picking up the pieces of ice all over the floor. Starting a conversation with a stranger is work, unless you have something in common -- so if you're going up with a conversational gambit but nothing else to base a conversation on, then it's not going to be much of a conversation, really.

Of course, if you're at a bar trying to pick up a girl, and it's that kind of place, she'll probably help you out conversationally if she's interested.

i was like this before...thing is, when you go up to girls, your immediatly thinking about being in a relationship with them and everything you say has to be perfect, or they'll hate you.

thing is, approach a woman like youd approach a guy, you gotta become friends with them before anything else, so talk to them like you would a guy, then it will all come a lot easier

ask them about themselves, this usually prompts a long conversation, and it can be interesting and telling at the same time
