i agree and i dont. i agree because theyre right, most over the counter medications really dont work all that well. pseudoephedrine is really the only thing that works well for colds. antihistamines work ok for allergies. most of the other stuff does little or nothing except like you said make them drowsy, but crying wont hurt them. theyll get tired after a hour and fall asleep. youre not as bad of a parent for letting them cry than if you kill them off. so why keep them around if kids are dying from improper use? but if they start pulling stuff though people will start self dosing their kids themselves with adult medications, that and running to the doctor everytime their kid has the sniffles and getting an antibiotic which contributes to antibiotic overuse and the bugs becoming resistant to them, which is more and more of a problem every year and by the way there actually is a link between SIDS and certain antihistamines, its not just overdosing

Don't know what you mean by 'off the shelf.' But, if you mean over the counter, Unisom (doxylamine succinate) is the best I've found. It helps get to sleep easier. It also has antihistamine properties to help if you have runny nose, etc. Then there's Benadryl (diphenhydramine), an antihistamine used for allergy symptoms and sleep. It works great, but leaves a sleep "hangover." For some people I've spoken to, Benadryl has the opposite effect and leaves them hyper!?

Don't ever take the sleeping pills route!!
1. They will damage your liver big time and you can get into serious health problems.
2. You will get hooked up on them and you won't be able to have a normal life any more if you don't take your pills everyday.
The sleeping pills industry is damaging our health by capitalizing on our ignorance, and by distracting people from effective and natural ways to deal with this problem. I had been taking prescription sleep medications [Ambien] for over 5 years. It stopped working and I simply took more. Still did not work. Nights were very difficult - medication put me to sleep but I would wake up after 2–3 hours with a strong sympathetic response (fast pulse, pounding heartbeat, wide awake alert). It was a very difficult cycle to break. I was really in bad shape due to lack of sleep.
After years of struggling I was able to cure my insomnia naturally and pretty fast. I followed the Sleep Tracks sleep optimization program, here is their official web -site if you want to take a look: http://www.insomniacure.net
Ohhh..and Good Luck!

I like benadryll. I use 1/4 of the typical dose and I start yawning one to two hours later and stay asleep for 4 to 6 hours. You can buy the generic version from Sam's Club for under $4 for 400 25mg. pills. Benadryl is an allergy medicine and the side effect is that it makes you sleepy. There is also melatonin, kava kava, gaba, hops, chamomile tea, scull cap and valirium root that some others use. Also increasing your magnesium intake. Good luck.

Well, what do you want to do? Sleep all day and night? No, thats none of my bussiness. All over the counter sleeping meds have that one medicine that benedryl has.I think It starts with a "D" And it only has 25mgs of that. But I looked at the active ingredients in Excederine PM and it has 30 or 35mgs in those pills. That is the strongest pill there is.If you find anything different please e-mail me and let me know. I really have problems sleeping. I cant sleep day or night. So I really need help.Heres my e-mail--klinedarlene@yahoo.com. I would appreciate any different info you have.

As with most over the counter sleep aids that end in ine.,or an..
Try semi hot milk,A study published in a recent issue of Neuroendocrinology Letters found that infants go to sleep faster after feedings. While no research has yet examined this phenomenon in adults, it’s not unreasonable to suggest that milk-guzzling grown-ups are unconsciously reminded of an infantile state which causes them to drift off. When milk is heated wallah, Triyptophan appears..tryptophan is converted to the sleep-inducing hormones serotonin and melatonin. It may cause some weird dreams, non the less it's a great sleep aid..
