I paid on my student loan for 10 years. I filed a forbrance a couple of times and then I had to file bankrupt. Then found out that student loans are not included. Now I am in default and they are gonna garnish my wages.

I got off paying on my student loan when it was repaid in full. It was also what I agreed to when I signed the loan documents.

There are 3 things in life you can never get out of, even IF you file bankruptcy. Taxes, child support and yes, student loans. Some student loans offer to pay a certain amount for different things, such as volunteer work or taking a teaching job in a certain area. (Perkins loans will do this.) I think the Army pays for a % or all of it. I would suggest seeking financial advice. One good place where you can learn and be discreet, is the website suzeorman.com, or you can watch her show every Saturday. Best of luck.

During the 70's and 80's people were able to blow off students loans by filing Bankruptcy.

Unfortunately the Federal government has changed
Bankruptcy laws in 1990 so that people cannot file Bankruptcy on any student loans.

Because of this you are pretty much stuck with your loans.

However, there are some student loan consolidation programs out there that allow you to condense your loans into one, thus giving you a lower monthly payment, and a shorter pay off date.
