How can I entertain my dogs during the long winter months? It's WAY too cold to take them out to play or for walks, it's -40 some days. And I don't have a huge house where they can run and romp. They do wrestle sometimes, but I think they need something more to do that I can do with them...Any suggestions?

I read a good idea in a book- strap a dog's favorite toy (or treat) to the top of a remote controlled car and drive it all over the house!

If they eat dry food, keep out a portion that you would ordinarily just give them and make them work for it. Do the usually doggy tricks, stay, sit, lay down etc. It will focus their energy. Also, hide the food and in small amounts to get them to search for it. You can do an obstacle course by improvising with pillows and sheets to form a crawl though space etc.Put a leash on them and walk in the house too. They won't think you're crazy, they love you.

Rawhides (the sturdy "newspaper roll" design) can help dogs expend a lot of energy! We have the same issue with our Lab & our Basset mix. When it's just too cold, they lie on the floor in our family room and chew (& chew & chew!!)
Also, the Kongs (brand name) sold at pet stores are cool. They offer mental stimulation for dogs. You stuff little treats in them (also sold at the pet store) and they have to work to get them out.

Hang in there....winter doesn't last forever! =)

Have them lay on the floor while you groom them and teach them to stay.
Hide a toy somewhere in the house and have them go find it.
Take them with you when you go to a drive thru bank, fast food, etc. (don't leave them unattended in your car at -40 below).
Take them to PetsMart.

You could always teach them to run the vacuum.

Use Kong Toys for wet food (you can freeze them.) Use Buster Cubes for dry food. They are wonderful tools for burning energy. Be sure to keep the dogs seperated when using food toys - they are very likely to squabble.

Has she began digging up your backyard and planting beds yet?
