it might be back pressure when the trunk is closed. With the trunk open there is no backpressure to work against the subs. This is assuming the back of your subs face the trunk.

the air can move out the back of the trunk and into a very open space, but with the trunk closed the waves hit the glass and whatnot and reflect back towards you...some of the waves come back distorted or actually penetrate through the glass, losing volume inside that car/truck
