America is mostly free. I stress mostly, well maybe it should be somewhat, but it certainly isn't absolutely free. There is a religious dominance, but that comes from the principles on which the country was founded. Christianity led the way, and it still dominates today because (1) the majority of the population falls within that faith and (2) tradition. I think America is trying to be more free with regards to race, but this takes time. It's not just the government it's the members of society who continue to make race an issue. And sexuality, is becoming less free. The gay-marriage debate certainly doesn't make you think of "land of the free", does it? That is ridiculous, but since it's a more modern issue/problem, then I'm sure that just as with race/segregation, it will take some time to mellow out. I agree that some freedoms aren't readily available, but for the most part we enjoy multitudes of freedom that other countries don't.

i am not American I am Australian . No country is truly free - as every country has rules and regulations that help the community and society function as a cohesive group. To a greater or lesser extent, the rules in each country at some point impinge upon the rights of the individual so that ideally in a western democracy one group cannot completely subjugate another.
i think the size of Americas population makes it hard to solve it's problems equitably.
i think also that until you guys accept that it's not good for the freedom of the innocent that you all have the "right" to bear arms - you cannot be free. Your police have to be so careful when arresting people as the likely hood you are armed is so much higher. We do have problems here but nothing like you guys have with the whole gun issue.
America seems to be a nation focused on Christianity. Given it's origins that's understandable - i just think Church and state don't mix. Especially when not all the people in that country are the same religion.
Our national leaders would never say "God bless Australia" in a political situation as we are a secular society . We have alot of people who purport to be Christian but they are not quite as influential as the Christian right appears to be in America.
Regarding your comment on race and sexuality. Things have improved alot in both Australia and America - but we had race riots less than 18 months ago. So people have to keep working on communication and understanding.
- on observation it appears (and I may be wrong here ) that in America it is very much left up to the individual to make their own way - your wages system seems to be very free so essentially if you don't have the brains or the ability to get on top you will live in pretty bad poverty.
In Australia we do have poverty problems too but still ( despite our current govts best efforts) have a strong safety net for the poor, Free health care (Bit of a waiting list though) and we have very clear anti discrimination laws. You can't abuse a race of people or refuse to employ them based upon your prejudice.
So on balance I would say neither Australia or America are "free'" but we have alot more rights than other countries - we just need to recognise that everyone in the community deserves a fair go.

Well, America is by no mean a free country. But if you compare it to other country specially to the middle East America is a paradise.

YES ! America is free to all who are Citizens and obey the Laws of this Land. But to those who do not obey the Laws, then to them America is not Free anymore. To any one who is illegal, it is not Free. America is based on Religions of all kinds. Hopefully, Americans will respect each other's Religion and allow those to believe as the want. Freedom of Religion. America consists of all types of culture and races. To be a Free, Happy America, we all need to Love and Respect each other for all we contain. God bless America.

Not free as in complete Anarchy.. We do a pretty good job at maintaining a fair degree of freedom while keeping our citizens safe though. That said, it could always use a little improvement, and as time passes we do see improvement.

i agree with you, but honestly, we are really priviliged in this country. healthcare is adequate, electricity almost always stays on, police and justice system is fairly effective (but don't get me started on the bias towards rich and poor people)

America could be more open towars sexuality and race, but for the most part, living here isn't so bad. from the ghetto to the farm to the big city, people aren't living with bombs goin off sporadically or being kidnapped and tortured like some other countries.

overall, i'm content with living in the States, but i still would like to see diversity in our government, more women, more Black-Latino-Asian, and overall more minorities, instead of mostly rich white dudes.

Yes, America is free. No one religion takes dominance and even if it did, it would not be because it is codified in our laws because that is against the first amendment in the Bill of rights. It would be because the majority of people choose to live that way.

We are a democracy, go study that.

1Government by the people, exercised either directly or through elected representatives.

2A political or social unit that has such a government.

3The common people, considered as the primary source of political power.

4Majority rule.

5The principles of social equality and respect for the individual

Relatively free - compared to, say, China or Iran. Not so free though as Canada, Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Belgium....
