It honestly depends on the kind of church you're joining....but if people look down on you for going to church, thats not the type of church you want to be a part of anyway. It's Gods house, not theirs. The first time I went back to church I was 21. I had bright red streaks in my otherwise black hair, all my piercings in, and I was sporting all black clothing at the time. Honestly I was kinda testing the waters. I wanted to see if people would shun me just because of how I was dressed. I also went to the early service, with all the older people. I expected to be thrown out on my ear.
The entire time, ONE old man glared at me, and he was the one who fell asleep in the middle of the service. Everyone else was very warm and accepting to me being there, and I knew I'd found my church.
People should be glad that you're going, not upset that you didnt join sooner. If they are upset then its a church that focuses on social status, not God, and I'd consider finding a new one. But in the end it doesnt matter what people think. If you find a church you like, and you're comfortable with, Stick with it.

Well I cant answer for other Religions, but I can tell you that the Seventh-Day Adventists welcome new comers with open arms and don't look down there noses at anyone.
Just be sure to join a church that teaches from the Bible and not doctrines of there own that has nothing to do with the Bible.
God Bless & good luck

each church is different. If I have been you, i could discover out what time the provider starts on Sunday, and then basically walk in, and sit down your self down. It takes a pair of Sundays to comprehend in case you fairly are mushy in that particular church. you could attempt one church right here, and attempt one there or there around the line. until you hit upon that area of interest, then make it as your church and be a widespread attender. connect activities if the church has it whether or no longer that's a weekday fellowship or regardless of. you're making it sounds like there must be a fee to starting to be a member of a church - that's morally incorrect if the church tries to assemble fee to connect. attempt a splash right here and there. it is acceptable to bypass on a Sunday.

One of our present deacons only became a Christian in the past 7 years. He was 61 at the time. No one looked down on him, but rejoiced when he made his decision to become a Christian and become a member of our church family.

It doesn't matter what anyone else may think. As long as you are being led by the spirit to join that church, it doesn't matter your age. The Bible says that the first will be last and the last will be first. No matter when you accept Jesus (hopefully now before it's everlasting too late), our timing is not God's timing.

If they look down on you at your new church, that tells you something about the spirituality at that church.
People think religion is all about mechanics and ritual. Light this candle before that one. Sacrifice this kind of animal. Fast on this particular day. That's not about anything!
People show you spirituality (or the lack of it) by how they go about their business in daily life. It's right in front of you. People who come to blows over "what kind of fruit was in the Garden of Eden" or "what kind of hat God wears" don't have a clue.

It does not matter what they think. Acceptance of salvation is wonderful no matter when it is done. God loved you before and now you will have a closeness with Him that gives access to that love. So who cares about the judgement of other people. I was told once that it is better to sit in church with hipocrites than to go to hell with them. In other words, join because it is the will of God, attend to learn about God and practice that faith in prayer and your everyday actions. Eventually those in Christ will see it and understand their mistake. Forgive those that do not. That will be their burden to bear.
