The first bit of advice is really the best. You can check out the amps at each of the manufacturer's website and would give you some idea of what you are dealing with. Andrew K's opinion is very accurate: HiFonics *used* to be really good, back in the day before they sold out to i-forget-who-bought-them. If you were lucky enough in the early 90's to get your hands on a HF Isis or Zeus or any of the others, you really had quite a powerful amp. Linear Power also was once a great amp (though you didnt ask about them).

As for Crunch and Power Acoustik, dont waste your time. I mean, they are okay if you are on a really low budget and are too impatient to save your money for something good but that's about it. The newer HiFonics, in my opinion, are still better than both.

Rockford is by far the best brand out of those you listed. Rockford has a long-standing history of being a stable company that makes reputable and widely used products. You find Rockford in most professional competitions such as NOPI or IASCA; their amps stay up with technology, and they really perform in virtually all occasions. Furthermore, unlike the PowerAcoustik and Crunch companies (and maybe HiFonics too, im not sure) Rockford doesnt mess around with wasting time on "max" power ratings. The will usually promote the RMS or nominal power of the amp and usually are conservative with that.

MTX has a long history as well and was once a very prominent figure in the car audio world. Their products have been known to be very good but, again in my opinion, it's questionable if they can hold up to their peers.

Memphis on the other hand is a younger company that has great products. I have used Memphis for a long time and have been very impressed. Still, you didnt ask about MTX or Memphis so lemme stop there.

Good luck!

HiFonics used to be good, but not really anymore. Crunch and Power Acoustics are low level brands also. Each of those 3 has a "high line" of amps, but for the most part don't waste your money.

I would suggest you look at MTX and Memphis. They are powerful amps, with just a little less power at lower impedences than a fosgate. All in all, MTX probably has the best bang for the buck. On the quality scale, I would look at Alpine or Nakamichi. Both of these brands supply a moderate amount of power with a reputation of quality. JBL has made good strides in quality and power, real good on price too.

Power Acoustik is OK, not the best obviously but still nice. Crunch amps not so much, my friend messed up his subs with one of those (it was labeled with the wrong wattage). Havent heard of hifonics

and just a few world records.
but I guess it will always be that way with the fosgate faithful
