You say your car does 27mpg. How do you know this? If this is the official figure for your car then it will be the combined urban and suburban figure. If you are doing mostly careful motorway driving as you say then you may be doing substantially more miles per gallon than you think. You may get 400+ plus miles from your tank of fuel.

If the figure of 27mpg is from a trip computer obtained using your usual driving style then Nick's figure makes sense to me.

It depends on a number of factors.

Fuel figures are based on particular speeds and environments.

Urban driving will reduce the overall performance due to higher pollution in the air that effectively dilutes the oxygen content. Rural driving will give better performance.

Driving at a constant speed will also give better results and (if you have one fitted) driving with your tachometer needle sitting in the sweetspot (mines between 2000 and 2200rpm) will give better mileage.

Most figures quote 56mph as giving the best return as far as fuel economy goes.

Then there's the weight of the car with just you in it or half full or fully laden. They all have an effect on the fuel economy and hence the maximum distance travelled.

You don't want to totally empty your tank do you? Also best make an allowance for an unexpected diversion from the motorway into the sticks where the garage could be awaiting a fuel delivery. Doh

I reckon on just over 354 miles. However, miles per gallon (or mpg) is not constant. For example, you could be running your engine whilst waiting at traffic lights or using excessive speed (both will use more fuel than anticipated).

To work it out:

1.75 pints = 1 litre (60 x 1.75 = 105 pints)

8 pints = 1 gallon (105 / 8 = 13.125 gallons)

Distance = 27 x 13.125 = 354.375 miles.

I hope this helps.

60ltrs + 13.24 gallons.
27mpg X 13.24 = 357.48 miles.
This is an average figure, you could sit in traffic for a while with your engine running and this will affect the overall figure

there are approx, 4.5 liters to a gallon so 60 liters divided by 4.5L=13.33333 multiplied by 27miles per gallon = gives you approx, 360miles on a tank
