Aleister Crowley started spelling it that way; it is spelled to indicate actual magick, as opposed to stage magic.

I personally don't believe in the concept of "white" or of "black" magic-- magic is energy. it is neutral. It is a tool, like fire-- which can heat up your home or burn someone, but it is the same fire. There is no different fire for good intentions or bad intentions, there is also no different magic for good or bad. As for Witchcraft, any spell that will manipulate his mind or what he sees is invasive. There simply is no way around it-- if you are messing with his mind, there is something wrong with that. Honestly if you are going to use spells at all I would tell you to use one on yourself-- to help you let go and move on, because obsessiveness about other people is not healthy at all and not a healthy foundation for any stable relationship. but real Witchcraft is not just using oils or lighting candles-- it takes years of mental discipline & study before you become adept. A good rule of thumb is if you have to ask on a message forum like this, you're probably not ready for spells.

Odalism is correct. It was started to separate what he and other people practiced (essentially prayer) from stage magic. Rabbits out of hats and that kind of crap. Crowley didn't actually start it though. Like most of what's attributed to him, he just popularized it.

It's a way to differentiate between stage magic and real magick.

It differentiates the "rabbit out of a hat" "stuff" - magic, from the Wiccan version "magick".

Some use the alternate spelling to differentiate it from "sleight-of-hand stage magic".
I think it was originally Crowley's idiosyncracy.

I believe that in the "Ye Olden Times", "magic" was spelled "magyck" so maybe that's a bit of half-way modernization there?
