heh...this is prolly something most will consider a empty answer...but basically its something like...when u pray for guidance or something...God will "show" you what to do...if according to his will...this could be done in a number of ways...including you making the right decision, someone talking to you about the subject...or just finding a book on the subject..."God works in mysterious ways"

You are right to wonder about this..
Talking to God, or Praying as most would call it can seem like a oneway conversation and I suppose it is.
Thinking that you have to hang out after saying a prayer, perhaps waiting for God to answer is not exactly what happens.
Response to prayer is not like a red flashing sign, it's more like a still small voice or inner prompting, perhaps a thought that suddenly comes to you, that answers the question you may have placed before God.
It's really quite something actually.
It's cool that you are asking these questions.. I hope you find all the answers you are looking for.
Prayer is a wonderful, comforting tool to use in our lives, and it's free.... we can pray/talk to God 24/7..
But be patient in waiting for answers.. they may take a very long to come, and will not always be the ones you were hoping for.

I do not follow the Judeo-Christian belief system as I am a Buddhist. However, I can tell you this much about talking to God. If you ask Him/Her/It a question it focuses your attention on that issue. You will then pay closer attention to clues around you that relate to that issue. You will eventually be able to come to a resolution based on your interpretation of those clues. Now I don't know if that is God leading you toward those clues or opening your consciousness to those clues or if you are just paying closer attention because you have defined the issue clearly in your mind. God has not yet found me worthy enough to tell me of His/Her/Its methodology. But one thing I do know is that defining the issue whether through prayer, meditation or scientific method, you will one way or another be able to resolve the issue.
I do not know if this helps you but it is my understanding of how these things work so take it for what it is worth to you.
Best Regards.
Robert

As you trust him, you find out that you have certain inclinations that are not typical to your normal behavior. It's not what a lot of people get through Hollywood, you know; where they are doing abherrent behavior including murdering people, but the inclinations that I am referring to are those that have you responding to people in wways that you don't expect. You were kind when you used to benasty, you tend to treat some of the things that you liked to do as if they were really not important anymore. You might even stop doing them altogether when there was a part of your life when you thought that you would ALWAYS do them. That could be something like fishing, or something as plain and innocent as that.
You find yourself doing things for others that you would have really had a hard time with before. Doing selfless things rather than things for yourself.

He has a few ways:
1) we can get an strong, clear and appropriate impulse to deal with the situation.
2) someone may make a comment that serves as an answer to our question/problem (possibly without even knowing about it)
3) dreams or visions (not that common). Key thing is they need to be vividly real.
4) overwhelming voice from a mountain (rare)

He speaks through life events. That's how I hear him.
That's not to say anyone's book, doctirne, or church is specifically wrong. The problem: how do you choose which one? There's a gazillion religions.
In my belief, if it happens or it exists, that's God talking. Everything has a reason. If you're waiting for a bright light and a voice, don't hold your breath.

It has to do with your "orientation", your "pre-conceptual framework".
When someone becomes a Christian, God's Holy Spirit is with them and we can feel his presence. We recognize things that don't please God in our lives, and we recognize right choices also.
The more we read God's Word, the more we understand who God is, what he's about, and what his plan for this world in general and our lives in particular.
When a Christian says God "talks to us", it's through the Holy Spirit who guides us in our spirit. When we're obedient to the leading of the Holy Spirit, he reveals more of God to us. When we don't, when we walk in sin, his presence isn't felt as strongly. It drives us back to him because we want to always walk in the light of the truth he brings into our soul.
That's the best I can do. It's an "experience" thing, you have to walk in the shoes to know what it's like.

They don't mean it literally (although it could happen). But if you read the Bible, and study what he has said about whatever you're thinking about, there should be an answer. Talking to God helps you relax, and come to peace with yourself (and God) and he will help you find an answer.

God speaks to us in a still small voice, it can seem like a thought in your mind. He also speaks through His word, the Bible. When God speaks to us it is always in line with His Word & to build us up. It takes practice to develop discernment & recognise to voice of God. Keep believing, keep listening.

God gave you intelligence and expects you to use it. Think about what you should be doing and then pray about that. If it is right you will feel it is right in your heart and perhaps a clear thought in your head. You will feel at peace. If it is wrong, you will feel confused, unsure, unpeaceful, uneasy. Don't expect God to tell you everything you should do every minute, you can use your brain to put yourself where you should be and to do what you should do. You will feel good about yourself.
