It also has to do with the shape of the egg. Something about how pressure on the top of an arch is distributed to the rest of the structure... if I were in a slightly different mood I'd look up a page on it, but I'm not in a slightly different mood. ;)

havent you ever held a bird? those things are really light weight
and the shell's thickness has to do with the size and weight of the bird and the bones are hollow

Birds are just tiny little creatures with tons of feathers. It would smush a fly if it sat on it!
