I try to stay away from the sincere questions unless I feel I might be able to contribute something. There are a large variety of reasons why an Atheist might post. You would be surprised how many Atheist actually provide the most accurate answer which also assists the Christian.

I have to assume you are talking about people who answer these questions in a negative way. Of course, this means you are completely overlooking all the positive answers people leave and lumping all atheists into one category. As this is typical, I'm not surprised. Perhaps you could direct your tirade at the people who are simply jerks, regardless of religion.
When I know the answer, I answer the question. For example, I directed someone to an online Bible site and gave a non-biased view of dealing with difficult people, despite the fact that the ? was directed toward Christians (chosen best answer, BTW).
So, to answer your first question, THAT is why I answer sincere questions from Christians - I have the answer. To answer your tirade, please refrain from judging people by a label or judging a group by the actions of a few.

I often respectfully answer questions that are sincere. I am a former christian and have valuable insight into so many questions that apparently cannot be answered without the benefit of an outside perspective.
I also wish to prosyletize atheism for the exact same reason as evangelicals and others do: to save the lives and minds of my fellow human beings.

For the same reason that Christians answer Pagan ones. A Pagan will ask a sincere question and Christians come along saying "if you keep believing in the Devil, you'll go to hell" or such other nonsense.
Fair's fair, isn't it?

An atheist is actually probably more likely to know what the bible says than your average christian, so why not? Not that asking this question is a desperate cry for attention... no... couldn't be.

I guess I'd have to ask the same question in reply. Why do Christians answer questions that are directed toward non-believers.
And why do people group people as either Christians or atheists? How about deists? agnostics? It appears that many Christians think that there is either black or white. You believe or you don't. How about using the term "non-Christians?" That might be better.

This is a public space and everyone can answer. If you are a christian who really wants guidance you're probably better off going to a church person or something like that don't you think?
