The son took his half of his father's estate, left and spent it all on prostitutes and booze. Realizing he was going to starve to death, he came to himself and determined that his servants had it better than he did.

So, he made the quality decision to go back to his father to serve him and live as a servant. While approaching the home, the father sees him and throws him a welcome home party.

The brother that stayed with the father, was put out about this and asked why his father never threw him a party. The father replied that the son that was lost had now returned and that a party was warranted.

The symbolism is that your Heavenly Father rejoices that you repent of your sin and accept His grace for Salvation.
