The word "I" should always be capitalized. The reason is because it came from the the Middle English "ich" (meaning "I"), that word coming from German. When "ich" became "I", it was originally written in lowercase, but often mixed up with either the word preceding it or following it. They started capitalizing it to keep it separate.

In English I (first person singular) is always a capital letter.
