Some communities have competing cable operators but this is usually not the case. For example, my city has their own cable service run by the city that competes with one of the national brands (i.e. Comcast, Time Warner, Charter). Other than that, mini-dish satellite is the main competitor, that being DirecTV and Dish Network. They most likely offer more channels and better packages than what you're getting from Charter, however if you look up one of the satellite carrier's promos and call up Charter telling them you're going to disconnect and go with satellite, they may offer you better prices for what you're getting now.
