Be very careful! I have a sister who has a scar across half her forehead from a cat scratch. A cat can be a dangerous animal, especially if it feels threatened. I think the sister needs to be supervised when dealing with the cat. She needs to learn how to properly hold and handle the animal. In time the cat will learn to trust the girl. It is a cycle that needs to be broken. She should sit down with the cat on her lap and gently pet the kitty. But if the cat wants up, it should be allowed to. Don't force the cat, build its trust.

You have an obligation to protect the one that needs protection. Your sister is old enough to understand simple instructions even if she doesn't quite get the fact that she is hurting the kitten. She loves the kitten and if she really understood, she wouldn't want to hurt it. So show her how to handle the kitten and let her know that those are the rules for getting to touch the kitten. If she can't follow the rules of touching then she won't be allowed to touch the kitten. Be consistent abvove all things. Once you show her a few times and forbid her to touch when she chooses not to follow the rules, she should improve. If she gets defensive or argumentative, tell her you aren't ASKING her, you are TELLING her the rules and she either chooses to follow and gets to play with the kitten, or she does things her way and looses the privilege. Do not go back on your word. If she won't follow the rules, you must follow through on the consequence.

As a Vet Tech, I can help. Do nothing. A cat will defend him or her self. The cat may just not like being held in a certain way, or just not want to be played with right now. Trust me, the cat will let her know.

Tell her that if she doesn't stop 'hurting' the cat so he 'yells,' you'll do whatever she is doing to him to her, so she can 'see' what it feels like. Then NEVER leave her alone in the room with the cat, until she can 'demonstrate' to you that she KNOWS how to handle it ... not just ONE TIME but over a month or more.

Teach her the right way to hold a cat. and insist with your parents ok that she hold him the right way. Tell her she will hurt the cat if she holds him the wrong way and if that happens then your parents will have to give the cat away.
