My brother is in prison and needs some information about inmates filing tax returns

I work in an Oregon State Prison. This time of the year many inmates are getting there W-2's sent to them. There are legal libraries inside of the prison's where inmates can recieve tax help in filing.

The income tax rules are the same for inmates as for anyone else. If your brother had any income, I'm sure the corrections officers can get him the forms he needs. If he is allowed to access the Internet, all IRS forms are available on the IRS website.

If a prison inmate has taxable income they have to file. There's no exemption for that.

Read the Instruction Pamphlet for Form 1040. It explains in the first few pages who has to file, and which forms are appropriate.

When people go to prison they lose all of their rights. Other than legal ones. But they can't file taxes.
