I just joined a gym and would like to really network with some interesting people any ideas?

Check with your gym and see if they have any classes you can attend that will help you to network with other people and find some friends that way - like a spinners class or aerobics or pilates...

It's good to make new friends if your old ones are mean. Sometimes all you have to say is "hi" or "hey". Don't be afraid of silence. It's not necessary to fill every moment with noise. If you are interested in a certain band or movie, ask them if they've heard/seen it. But try to ask questions that have more than a yes or no answer. Tell them your favorite song and why and then it will lead them to open up and talk about their favorite too. If they don't start talking, it's okay, try the next day. When someone says what's up, it's okay to have the same answer all the time, like "not much" or "the sky" or something you feel comfortable saying. Overcoming shyness is difficult, practice saying certain phrases in the mirror until they are comfortable. It would be good to find one good friend than try to be Mr. popular. "what's up" is just a way to say "hi", so use it when you would say hi. Or just say hi, find what suits you best. This can also work when talking to girls. Just take an interest in what others are saying and don't be self centered. That makes people feel good. As for the nods, I have no idea.

Does the Gym have any kind of lounge area?
Otherwise, just casually talk to people, but take a hint if they don't respond. Some people don't like to be bothered at the gym.
