I always wait until they "name themselves"
For instance my dog "Foster" was almost named "Mr Myagi" until I opened a beer and he came running and wanted some beer (we have him weaned off now, he was a rescue who didn't know much, but he knew what beer was)
And my other dog "Regan" was named because she puked on her other mommy 5 times during the ride home, and she is sweet most of the time, but other times she is a little Devil!!
