Well, with Ruth, it meant that no matter where her mother-in-law, Naomi, went, she would go to. You have to remember that at this time, Ruth's husband, along with his brothers had been killed in battle. That meant that Ruth was free to go back to her family, but she really didn't have family she trusted. She had grown to love Naomi and valued her belief system. All the other daughters-in-law left, but Ruth stayed to be there for her and to support her. I take it as a statement of love and respect more then a statement of her following her. It is saying that she will always be there and wouldn't leave Naomi alone when she needed Ruth.

This is from the Book of Ruth in the Old Testament.
Ruth was saying this to Naomi, her mother in law, after Ruth's husband, which was Naomi's son had passed away. The custom of the time was for the widow to go back to her own people. Ruth was from Moab, and not a Jew.
This verse has many meaning, first, it was indicative that Ruth had convereted to Judaism (thy God is my God), second it's an indication that Ruth loved her Mother in Law and wanted to take care of her.
This is one of my favorite stories from the Bible, it really shows the devotion that we need to have for one another.

That was Ruth, speaking to Naomi.
Ruth's husband had died, and Naomi was her mother in law. Naomi urged her to go back to her family, but instead she chose her new "family" to be with. Thats all it means.

Ruth said this to Naomi implying she'd go with her (her mother-in-law)(her husband was dead) anywhere she chose. She also said that her (Naomi's) God would be her (Ruth's) God. (rather that the gods she'd had before she married Naomi's son.)
