I have a daughter who is 4 years old. Both her older brother who is 5 and her younger brother who is 13 months both eat their vegetables and everything else that is good for them. The only thing my daughter will eat is fried chicken and mashed potatoes or anything else having to do with potatoes. I want her to eat healthy and offer veges to her she won't eat them. She's extremely thin but I'm afraid she isn't all that healthy considering what she limits herself too. Any suggestions on getting her to eat better?

my daughter searches through her food to find hidden objects. I tried hiding the good food before but it didn't work. I offered her her favorite deserts but its still a NO. She cannot be tricked into eating anything healthy.

I think a lot of times I give in because she throws these hour temper tantrums. I give her what her brothers eat and I have sent her to bed without any food. I just don't want my daughter to be hungry I guess.

Don't make things like mashed potatoes available to her. She is at an age where you control what she eats. If you only offer her healthy choices then she will develop good eating habits. I had problems with my son when he was at that age. The advice my doctor gave me was that if he's hungry he will eat.

Take Something Away Like A bed time story an after school snack or a treat Limit how much Potatoes she can have and give her small amounts telling her if she does not eat her veggies she can not have any more potatoes. Also do not give in to her whineing and crying or spoil her ecause she is the only girl. Stick to your plan to get her to eat healthy but if the problem countinues tell her Doctor.

Good luck _ God Bless you

Simple. I saw this on Dr. Phil.......his advice was to not make fried chicken or mashed potatoes. That way she doesn't even have the option to eat it.

Instead, serve her a variety of the healthy foods you want her to eat, and she can choose from those what she wants.

At first, she may throw a fit and reject the healthy food, but eventually she will have to eat, since that will be all you give her.

She is four, I do not see why you give her a choice. If you are very worried about her health supplement her diet with vitamins. If you offer healthy food and they refuse and you turn around and give them something else then you are catering and not doing any favors to her health and of course she will continue to refuse because she knows you will give in. I mean most people would certainly rather have mashed potatoes than asparagus....come on. You have to be in control of her diet while she is young. By the way just because she is thin does not mean she is unhealthy.

Try giving a snack in between breakfast and lunch and then again between lunch and dinner. Funny - My daughter is all of a sudden obsessed with eating and asking when the next meal is. I think it's somewhat normal as long as she isn't over eating.

A child will not starve herself. YOU are the parent, YOU control what kind of food is offered. SHE decides whether to eat it or not.
To take it a step farther, you can supplement her diet with Pedia Sure products to make sure that what she eats outside of meals is nutrient dense.

There is a book called "Child of Mine" by Ellyn Satter, a registered dietitian. I strongly encourage you to buy it or get it from your local library. Her entire book is about teh feeding relationship between parents and children, and it is full of practical suggestions for getting your child to eat the right foods.

All you can do is set the example. Rarely do children damage their long-term health this way, but you should also be talking to her pediatrician. Doctor may put her on a multivitamin for awhile if doctor feels there is a problem. But for GOSH sakes don't try to diagnose a problem on your own and go buying a bunch of "alternative" remedies or feeding her vitamins on your own...certain vitamins can be highly toxic if too much is given, and in a child, it does not take a lot to be too much!

The funny thing about kids is they'll eat what you give them. Feed her exactly what you feed her brothers. If she refuses to eat, let her go hungry. Her brain will listen when her body tells her it's time to eat. If you're worried about her weight, talk to her pediatrician about healthy calorically dense foods.

maybe tell her if she eats some veg she can get a treat after as one of the foods she enjoys, or start a sticker chart to reward her for eating healthily it worked with my brother. if that doesnt work you can always disguise it in other food she probably wont notice good luck

don't make fried chicken or mashed potatoes an option...maybe like baked chicken and rice with veggies or something...you still have the chicken in there then...
