1st - There is no such thing as 'atheism'. For that to be true the person would have to have absolute knowledge of absolutely everything! That makes a person 'agnostic', they do not have any personal belief in a God.
2nd - The answer is NEITHER -
Having 'religious beliefs and customs', does not mean that you have 'faith'.
A person can attend as many services they want, read the Bible as much as they desire (in front of others), and contribute to the building of others through volunteering or any other means.
BUT that does not give them 'faith'. Those things are just an outward show to people, that you are 'religious'.
Showing of 'faith' comes when you are facing adversity and you by 'faith' give all things over to God to handle. It is through 'faith', that you are sure that all things will work out for you. Not because you have done anything to help the situation, but because you know God is in control.

Atheism is a religion whether they accept it or not because they believe in something that is not physically there. They believe that if they just wait a little longer God will be proven a fairy tale, but while there waiting scientist are proving over and over again that we are the product of intelligent design. Even some of the most renowned scientists have become Christians after they spent their whole lives as atheist. If they actually research with an open mind they will find the lies that have been put into science textbooks for years and are still there. God is everywhere and He shows himself in everything we look at. Irreducibly complex systems show that the odds of evolution are one in many trillions.

Atheism = lack of faith. Basically think of it as a person who is willing to believe in something with no proof (faith) versus someone who needs some foundation to base their beliefs upon other than a book.
But I see what your getting at, and even if there is faith in both, religion definately requires more.

Your definition is one of two.
It also means "Without theism - aka holding no belief in a god". (weak atheism) Please look it up.
This requires no belief. This is often misconstrued as Agnosticism. Agnosticism is the philisophical position or belief that it is not possible to prove that god does or doesn't exist. It is neutral on the belief about god's existence.
The strong atheism position requires less belief than the typical Christian god, simply because the Christian god has so many "characteristics" to accept.

Religion! Um, who is bringing up the concept of God?Who has more supernatural stories? Who believes in things that are not of the material world? Atheists are basing their faith on non supernatural phenomenons.

The existence of God cannot be proved or disproved. To believe that which cannot be proved is an act of faith. Therefore believing that God does or does not exist requires faith.

Believing in something requires faith. Not believing in something does not require faith.
Believing in a religion requires much more faith than not believing in a religion.

Living in a predominantly Christian Nation (82+% according to CNN last month) I quess you would need tough skin to be an atheist. That said, faith is the belief in something unseen. I was under the impression that an atheist believes in nothing - they just waddle about until they die and thats pretty much it.
I think if i were atheist, I would be depressed. My potted plants and I would be on the same level. Consciousness would be unneeded - only instinct would be required - eat when hungry, drink when thirsty, make love when horney, etc.etc..
What other level would be required? That not being the case, I think one should re-think their position, but thats not my decision -everybody has to sail their own ship.

Depends on where you stand.
Atheists would say atheism require more faith, while the theists would say having a religion require more faith.
