Apple pie "a la mode" is just apple pie with ice cream, so you would make the pie and serve it with ice cream on top. Delicious!

Here's a good apple pie recipe, but I often use Pillsbury refrigerated pie crusts, they work really well and are very easy.

GRANNY'S FAVORITE APPLE PIE
Crust:
2 3/4 cups sifted all purpose flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 cup shortening
1/4 cup butter
2 to 3 tbsp. cold water

Combine flour, shortening, salt, and butter with pastry blender until mixture is crumbly. Gradually stir in water to form dough. Divide dough in half and shape into a flat round shape. Wrap in plastic wrap or waxed paper and chill for half an hour. Fit one of the circles into a 9 inch pie pan. fill with filling and cover with second sheet of dough. You may also cut the top layer into strips before placing it on top of the filling.

Filling:
4 apples (tart apples preferred)
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1 tbs flour or cornstarch

Peel apples and cut into thin wedges. Combine with sugars, cinnamon and nutmeg. Mix together. Put filling into pie crusted pan. Bake at 400°F for 40-50 minutes.

Apple pie alomode is just apple pie with ice cream!

I'll put a really simple, beginner's recipe--more like instructions--at the end of this, or if you really want to get into the baking, go on the web, to the library, to your favorite cookbook or whatever and find an apple pie recipe that you are comfortable with (...making crusts can be difficult if you are a beginning baker, for example...).

But first thing you need to know is not to be intimidated by the words a' la mode. It literally means "in the style" but actually just means...ice cream (usually plain old vanilla) served on top of or overlapping next to your slice of pie. It's like "florentine" -- all that means is Spinach!

INSTRUCTIONS:

- The simplest way to make an apple pie, for a beginner, especially, is to purchase a pre-made pie crust in your refrigerated section and apple filling in the baking section (it will come in a can, buy at least two).

(Note: if you are going to make your filling, use a recipe and only use GREEN apples. If you just cut up apples and stick them in the pie it will go really bad really fast!)

- The top of your pie can be three ways...completely blanketed by a crust (you use the same prepared crust that will make the bottom of your pie, just using an extra one for the top), "latticed" which is where you layer strips of crust crossways, or open-faced where you don't put a top crust on at all:

* full top: be sure to use your fingers or a spoon to crimp the edges of the top and bottom together and use a knife to cut holes (you can get creative and cut "pretty holes" or just make slices) so that the steam can escape without breaking up your crust.

* latticed: cut your crust top into medium-thick strips and layer half going one way and half going the other way on top of the filled pie pan (with bottom crust and filling already in it). Be sure to crimp the edges!

* No top: crimp the edges to look nice, but make sure you remove about a 1/4 of the filling "juice" before you put it in and pack it thck, so it wil hold together better once cooked and not just slide right out of the pan.

- Time to cook will be on the can of filling, use their recommendation. If you have a top, about 5-10 minutes prior to being done, mix melted butter and egg and brush it on the almost fully baked pie top to give it a golden crust.

Get some ice cream and you're good to go!
