The biggest problem with America after ww1 is we stopped teaching German in high schools, and then in ww2 we had a war with Germany and needed the translators.
We definately need to study religions and religious beliefs and religious people.

Science has studied the sacred, and found it wanting. Two millieum has been wasted studying theology, it was only when we went back to pagan cultures, that science was allowed to flourish again.
Religion has persecuted science for the about 1000 years. It's about time that the followers of religions started to study science!

Science HAS studied it. There are tons of Philosophy and psychology books out there that cover this issue.
The same reason adults believe in a god is the same reason a child has an imaginary friend. This has been proven over and over again. People believe in a god solely for comfort and insecurity reasons.

It's not a question of whether science "should" investigate the supernatural. Science cannot do so, for the supernatural falls outside the purview of science. Science by definition is the study of the natural universe in natural terms. Anything supernatural, eternal, spiritual, moral, etc. is not subject to the methods of science.

The sciences do study such things. I would recommend to you "Why God Won't Go Away," and Why We Believe What We Believe," by Andrew Newberg and others.

"Science" has. There are dozens of excellent books on the topic. Begin with the classic - William James' "Varieties of Religious Experience."
