we have cockatiels, budgies & a parrot in our large aviary (rescue birds) - and they are very well fed...but none of them ever seem to get fat - does anyone know why? they eat their own seed...bread, cress, sweetcorn and the parrot has lots of treats like cheese, crisps, biscuits...but they all stay the same size!

all birds get a fat layer similar to the fat layer on your average chicken.
The difference is the fat,in domestic fowl its a white thick layer, in wild non domestic birds its a yellow layer that is not layed on thickly,it is spred thru the main muscle areas and on the flight muscles.
Your birds probably get enough exercise so they maintain muscle structure over being being "cooped up" pardon the pun which results in the bunging fatty areas u see in domestic fowl.

Since your birds get more exercise than many pet bird, this really makes a difference. A great pellet food and limiting seeds to 10% and fruits and veggies 10-20% will also have the potential to avoid fatty liver disease. Some that get afflicted are not obese. Sounds like you have a great set up. I would like to be a bird there if I was a bird. Have a tweet year.

Well, birds have a very high metabolism so its harder for them to gain weight, but not impossible. I've seen plenty of overweight birds at our clinic. The problem is that most owners dont notice the difference underneath the feathers, and its such a small amount that make a bird overweight. Consider that a 500gram bird doesnt look much different than a 600gram one, but if 500 is the ideal weight, then 600 is 20% overweight. More owners need to be aware of their birds weight, so they can tell if there is a sudden change.
