The current definition of the Hebrew calendar is generally said to have been set down by the Sanhedrin president Hillel II in around the year 359 CE. The original details of his calendar are not real clear but it was Hillel II After Yes The Hebrew calendar is very different and is lunar based. Also our days and months are different. For instance, today is 6 Nissan 5772 while in the Gregorian Caledar is it March 29, 2012

RE:
how do you say beginning in hebrew?

2015-08-13 08:20:25 · answer #5 · answered by Samson 1 · 0 0

If you want the verb form (ie. I am beginning) it is haht-cheel (hatchil)

note the ch is pronounced like the ch in Loch Ness and not as in cheese

If you want the noun form (i.e. in the beginning) it is ray-sheet (reishit)

The first words of the Torah are "in the beginning" which adds the prefix b- to the word to indicate "in the". Hence, B'reishit means "in the beginning"

So long story short:
Verb: hatchil (feminine form hatchila)
noun: reishit
