What are the best ways of traveling around Rome? Walking obviously for short distances. But would anybody recommend renting a car? I've also hear good things about the trains... Thanks!

Yes I have seen Italian driving in action, I am currently studying abroad in Cagliari... Scooters wouldn't be such a bad idea... and definitely I want to visit Naples, Milan and Venice but that depends on my parents! Thanks for the responses!

Do not rent a car in Rome unless you are comfortable driving in chaos. If you have driven in Mexcio City or similar, it would be fine for you. I would not rent a Vespa either...why worry about the theft (which will be an issue) while you are on vacation?
The trains in Italy are unlike any other country in Europe. They do not run on time most of the time and are famous for labor strikes. They often shut down due to stirkes.
We have always used the underground subway with very little trouble (if there is not stirke). You may also want to consider just buying one of those all day on-off tour bus tickets that take you on an established route of all of the sites. You simply get off where you want and then hop back on to get to where you want to go next. You don't have to wait as long as you do for the public buses (also rarely on time) and you get commentary while you ride. You can pick them up at any major site including the Vatican. Have fun.

The only way of seeing Rome is to walk everywhere. I was there in November '06, and walked the entire time. Its not a big city, and by walking you see some fantastic things that you would otherwise miss.
Do NOT hire a car in Rome. There's nowhere to park it, and if you find a spot, the chances are that it'll get broken into or even stolen. (Rome has the highest stolen car rate in Europe.)
The Metro is good and fairly cheap, but as I said, walk everywhere and you wont regret it! What an amazing city .. one of the best cities in the world.

I wouldn't advise renting a car. Scooters, maybe. We traveled through Rome walking and on the metro. The metro is really effecient, but gets VERY crowded at rush hour, so beware of pickpockets. We had no trouble in Rome with them. The metros in all the Italian cities we went to were really quite good.

i become wondered through the performance ot the roman public shipping when we went there in January so i'd propose the bus. Going to Pisa is feasible with a appropriate away prepare (see the link) will require travelling to Firenze (utilising the HST) an then a community prepare to Pisa. Pisa (meaning the historic district is little or no and each little thing is in walking distance from each little thing different) yet once you've time get a vehicle and force on the former SS12 (no longer the recent!) once you'd be 500-one thousand ft over city you'll see a wonderul surroundings.the line is quaite winding: end an income from the wiew.

Rent un motorino (motor scooter). Specifically, rent a Vespa! I did - and it was the best decision I made.
Also, do use the underground subway....however, Rome only has an A and a B line, so it's sometimes limited to where it can get you...
