...and what is your faith of choice now?

The only possible reason for laving the Catholic Church is ignorance. No-one who recognizes what the Catholic Church is, and its necessary role in salvation, could possibly leave it. Unfortunately many Catholics are woefully ignorant of their faith, and are therefore susceptible to the lure of simplistic watered-down manmade religions.

A lot of them were apparently raped by priests - I bet that'll do the job. Either that, or you'll develop an unhealthy sexual fixation on the trappings of Catholicism. How many ex-Catholics are into S&M - show of hands? Coincidence?

Actually, I'm an ex-Catholic. I was even an altar boy, but I was never fortunate enough to have been molested by the clergy. For me, the "change of heart" came when puberty gave me a real moral sense, and I understood that the dogma of the Church with regard to sexuality in general, and homosexuality in particular, was evil, backwards, anti-human, and disgustingly hypocritical - all of which was only confirmed by the recent revelations.

Because Santa was an obvious lie to me, at three and a half years old. After that, how can you trust any adults and their magical nonsense?
I tried till I was 15 years old. The reason I really gave up had to do with my not being able to accept the way my body grew and didn't grow...
I asked for the desired change.
I asked for society to change so I could stop feeling so poorly about my body, and the clothing choices I could never make because I could never fit.
Then, I asked for help with acceptance.
And when I realized, after a year of fervent praying, that I STILL wasn't being helped, even though I ASKED for the RIGHT THING, well, you can forget it.
There really is no difference between Santa and God.

I'm a convert TO Catholicism, and, as such, am very interested in why people would leave what I consider the One True Church. In my experience, people leave for the following reasons:

1) They have lost their faith. These folks tend to become atheists, agnostics, deists, etc. One man I know is a pantheist.

2) They never really understood the Catholic faith to begin with. These folks tend to become evangelicals, "born-again", fundies, etc.

3) The Church won't condone their behavior (they are in a second "marriage" or a same-sex relationship, they want to undergo in vitro, etc.) These folks tend to become mainstream Protestant.

4) They have been badly hurt by someone in the Church, and have trouble separating that person's actions from the Church as a whole.

I am not a Catholic, but I have an extremely close friend who is. He has chosen to be agnostic. He thinks all religion is violent and doens't make sense for the world we live in. I asked him one time and that was all he would say. I left it at that and didn't try to dig deeper.

I believe that women should not be told what they can or can't do regarding birth control, pregnancy, etc.

Also, the Catholic church is a very very lucrative business and I'm not interested in supporting their backwards views on procreation, etc.

I consider myself a Christian now. I believe there is a God.

Christian still, non-denominational. There are too many doctrines in the Catholic Church that were not set up by God. The wishes of the Pope do not outweigh God's law. We are not to pray to anyone except God, through Jesus. Mary is not Holy. A priest is not needed to forgive our sins. He cannot tell us that we are forgiven. Chanting, reciting prayers. It's not what the Holy Bible says to do. I could go on and on, but you get the idea.

May God Bless you.

the more you read the bible the more you begin to be convicted that some of the rituals and such are not biblical. I believe in Jesus and thats all I need, not some man to go through to get to him or tell me what to do, he is a sinner the same as myself, I also feel as if they worship mary, i understand that she was the mother of jesus but i read jesus' response to her one day in matthew 12 47-50. there is no perfect church, but i pray to god to lead me where he wants me and where i feel the are living as close to the bible as possible.

Jeff...I grew up Catholic....However, it is not Catholics who have a monopoly on truth, but Jesus Christ Himself....
We hold to the teachings of Christ...whether the Church does or not....
It is He that we are forever loyal to....
I wish catholics would emphasize that..
