The average amount of daily sleep for people is 7.5 hours. However, there is considerable variability in how long people sleep. Sleep needs vary from person to person. It depends on how well you sleep, whether you go in to REM a deep sleep and sleep soundly or if you are a light sleeper that wakes up several times a night.
Asking how much sleep the average person needs isn't a very useful question, much like asking what shoe size the average person needs. If everyone were given average-size shoes to wear, most people would be very uncomfortable. Some people have hard manual labor day jobs and really need that good nightly sleep in order to recoop their body. Others may work a job that takes a lot of intellectual reasoning and this also can make you need more sleep. So it depends on who you are and what you do. I am told that if you get 7 hours a night of good sleep you are doing fine.
For those who have problems sleeping you should get checked out to see if you have some form of sleep apnea. Also you shouldn't drink liquids right before you go to sleep because your bladder will wake you up. If someone elses snoring or outside noises keep you up you can try ear plugs, they really work.

I'm an 8 hour a night person (I'm 35) I believe everyone is different though and it all depends on whether you have sleep to catch up on. If I haven't had much sleep for a 3-4 days I need to sleep for ages to recover, maybe 12 hours. Usually on 8 hours my health is better, I look better and don't feel tired at all.

People of different ages need various amounts of sleep. As you get older you need less and less. Your body and mind stop developing at the rate that it did when you were younger. College students and high school students need a good eight hours of sleep. As you get older 6-8 is fine. Children should get closer to 12 hours, 8-10 towards puberty. Of course everyone is different. Some people can't function on six hours of sleep, while others thrive.

most people -- 8-9 hours. but as the other girl above me said, it depends on your age. here we go:
infants - 16 hours.
children - about 10 hours.
teenagers - 8 1/2 - 9 hours.
adults - 7-8 hours.
women pregnant in the first three months need several more hours of sleep than usual.
* keep in mind that your sleep habits/patterns also depend on if you are an alcohol drinker, how active you are, how many hours before sleep you drink cofee,, etc. for more info, go to the site listed below.

"The National Sleep Foundation maintains that 8 hours of sleep is optimal, claiming that it brings improved performance in tests, reduced risk of accidents, and a better immune system.[citation needed] A widely publicized 2003 study[1] performed at University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine demonstrated that cognitive performance declines with less than eight hours of sleep.
An American study found that people who live the longest sleep for 4 to 7 hours each night[2]. However, this study cannot be used to determine optimal sleep amount because the study did not find cause, only correlation - and correlation does not imply causation."

for adults, 8 hours is recommended, but it can vary from person to person. i'm perfectly functional on a consistent 4-6 hours of sleep. basically you should determine how long you sleep when you allow yourself to wake up without an alarm, try this a few times, average it out and try to get that much sleep every night.

Drawing on my own personal experience, I tend to sleep more during the winter months vs. the summer. The duration ranges from 6 to 8 hours total every day. But I think it changes with people and with age, mental and physical health, etc.

Any Dr. will tell you 8-9 hrs. of sleep is good for you as your body heals during sleep. We can not always get that much sleep because of school, homework, working, etc.I try to average about 8hrs. sleep every night, and if I do not get that much, I do not have the productivity I would have if I get a good nights sleep. Always remember, that your body heals when you are sleeping good, so 8hrs. will keep you healthy, and less than that you have a better chance of getting rundown, and possibly sick.
