This conclusion followed detailed analysis by engineers andscientists at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md., andthe Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) in Baltimore. Thoroughtesting of the two-gyro mode was completed prior to implementation.

The gyros are an integral part Hubble's complex pointing controlsystem. The system maintains precise pointing of the telescope duringscience observations. The system was originally designed to operate onthree gyros, with another three in reserve. Two of the six are nolonger functional.

"Hubble science on two gyros will be indistinguishable from thesuperb science we have become accustomed to over the years," saidsenior Hubble scientist David Leckrone at Goddard.

Gyros are the heart, though not the sole component, of Hubble'spointing control system. When only two gyros are available, theobservatory experiences an "unsensed" direction. Using Hubble's FineGuidance Sensors, engineers were able to "fill in" the missing datanormally generated by the third gyro.

Hubble also needs to know its location as it completes oneobservation and slews across the sky to acquire its next target. Thisinformation, previously supplied by the observatory's three gyros, isprovided by onboard magnetometers and Fixed Head Star Trackers.

Many Hubble astronomers were consulted and were part of the overalldecision process about two-gyro science operations. Switching off onegyro can preserve it for future use and extended two-gyro operationaltime for Hubble.

NASA has stated a Space Shuttle servicing mission to Hubble will beconsidered after two successful return-to-flight missions. Theservicing mission would include installing new gyros, batteries, andscience instruments to provide several more years of observations.

Hydro ALTERS the environment. The key here is that it creates a change. The tree huggers of the world are against anything that would leave a human touch on the environment. Therefore they will never be happy until mankind is dead and their mark has been completely removed. Each building, road, power pole is an abomination to them. There is no green power source that is an end all. Hydro is good but it needs to be balanced. Some rivers can have small hydro units placed in the flow of the river without damming the river. These units are rather small but then again they don't dam the river so the impact is lessened. Another issue with dams is the chance of global weather shift. If you place a dam on a river then have 10-15 years of drought you put an expensive dam in the wrong place. Another big issue with global warming is not just energy but in the supply of water. Most of the worlds population do not have a good supply of water. Potentially millions will die from lack of water and the lack of water caused famine.

I haven't heard of Gyro power but Hydro power is not as globally friendly as you have been made to believe.

Hydro power with its reservoirs releases methane gas, which is 21 times stronger greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide. This means that hydroelectric dams contribute to global warming not at as much as fossil fuels but still considerable.

Also Hydroelectric dams ave been developed extensively. The majority of all rivers and streams in the world have been diverted and dammed up to some extend there is little more that can be developed with regard to Hydroelectric dams.

Hydro-electric power is well developed where there are rivers with a sufficient amount of constant-flow and head-water to keep them running all year. The best example in the UK is probably Pitlochry.

Unfortunately, it is only in places like Norway that hydro-electric power can be used extensively.

However, hydro-electric power CAN be used in unexpected way to cut down on fossil-fuel consumption, as in Wales.

Generating plants seldom shut down, but continue to produce electricity even when it is not needed; though they go into a sort of heated "stand-by" mode at off-peak periods. In Wales, they drilled through the hills, and connected a mountain-lake to a lower one; running the overflow water through a hydro-electric plant. Silly idea, you may think, because there isn't enough rainfall to sustain a constant power-supply.

Not a bit of it!

What they do, is use off-peak electricity to pump the water uphill to the mountain lake, and then when there is peak-demand, they release the water into the rivers and lakes below, via the hydro-electric plant; thus getting more electricity from the energy used at off-peak periods.

That is a technology which is well known and well used around the world; but it isn't as dramatic or obvious as a great dam, with powerful generators stuck in the middle of the Colorado River.

You need to read a bit more, I think.

There are lots of downsides of renewable energy sources, despite the fact that they are less polluting than fossil fuels.
I don't know what gyro power is but here are some downsides of hydroelectricity:
1) It involves the construction of large dams and is therefore expensive before you start saving money that would otherwise be spent on fossil fuels, plus it's labour intensive
2) You have to find a suitable place to have a huge hydroelectric dam with the flooded valley that goes with it.
3) Some people claim that they spoil the views and the landscape

Never heard of Gyro power.... Hydro power in the US has pretty much been developed. Every river that could be used for Hydro power pretty much is. Also, every time they try to build a hydro power station environmentalists complain that it will ruin the environment, lol. You can't win with them, can you?

Well I dunno what gyro is, but hydro isn't built in the UK because you need a hill for the water to flow fast down a slope and power the turbine. It is also very expensive for the government to build, much more so than nuclear. They take up a lot of space too!
