Ok you're on the button so you throw out a small raise with 98 off. One caller. You miss the flop (say 3 5 J). Opponent checks, you bet 2x the big blind, and he calls. Turn doesnt help (another 5 or whatever) he checks again. Now what? Fire again? If you check back you're basically running up the white flag. Bet again and you might lose more. I know this can kinda be situation by situation but just thought it'd be fun to get some feedback.

Well that depend on a lot things: Your image at the table, the style of play of your opponents, your game history with him, his stack of chips, your stack.......etc.

Anyway, you talk about running up the white flag, but actually that should be the red flag for you!, he call your bet, so he might have something to work with (1/2 pairs, draws...). 2x the big blind it's kind of weak, you should have bet, half or 3/4 of the pot. Again depending on a lot things, but I would bet the turn if that give me a draw too, so I make a semi-bluff, and if he call, you know he has a hand, but the river might give you on 8 or 9 or a straight,a flush, if not you better give up and check.

You don't bluff on "whatever", poker is a game were you react in the moment, and each action had on objective. If you give me more details, I can answer you a lot better. You can contact me on my site.

Fold Preflop --- especially if there were other callers
If you are going to raise, i would hope nobody else called yet, and you made it at least 3X big blind to go. A smaller raise and the big blind is getting odds to call with any two cards

As far as the flop, it has good texture so a continuation bet of 1/2 pot is acceptable.
Who is still in the hand? If it is one of the blinds and they called your flop bet, there is a decent chance they hit the 3 or the 5.

The turn will only help him if he hit the flop. You can take one more stab at it if you think he may fold, for about 2/3 of the pot.
If he calls, check/fold the river

There are a lot of assumptions to make here, but keep in mind that this guy called a raise pre-flop. So he has something to play with. He then checked and smooth called. I'd put him on a draw with two overcards at this point, or possibly a middle pair in the hole. He'll see cards for free if he can, but doesn't want to throw out more money than he has to. And you have to figure that his hand is good enough that he wants to protect it. So at the turn, when he checks, I'd put him on a marginal hand, maybe middle pair or a draw again. If he had top pair or an over pair he'd be more aggressive. Figure out how much you're willing to invest, and fire away. But don't be afraid to give this hand up if he raises.

Check, try get a read on what he has. If he puts in a bet over the top it wouldn't really be worth chasing the river on a bluff when the opponent is willing to call you. It all depends on how you play you may be able to bluff him out with big bet but I'd rather have half a hand on a bluff and maybe have a hope for winning before raising your bet. Good luck matey

I probably wouldn't have raised after the flop, but if I found myself in that situation, my reaction would really depend on what I wanted my table image to be for that session. I'm a pretty tight player, so in this case, I might keep betting, and if I lose the hand, they're gonna peg me as a bluffer. So the next killer hand I get, I'll be able to take them all the way to the bank.

But if everyone at the table already knows how I play, I'd probably just check/fold.

If you bet every street you need to continue to bet, Firing this third bullet at the turn with nothing should take the pot down-- He is showing his weakness by checking you need to harness this weakness -- he is basically saying take the pot by checking, if there are not three flushes or if you think he has the card that has pair the board then pet the pot and take the pot

If you want this pot (you didn't say how much the blinds were) then you have to fire big one more time, if he calls then he probably is sitting there with at least a pair of jacks maybe more to keep calling you, so then you gotta let it go. You also didn't say how big your stack was to keep firing away with, so that would also dictate what you do/are willing to lose.

Check and see the last card. If he comes out betting, fold and take your loses.
