Hi Lindsey. I have a daughter your age and I'll tell you what I told her. Since I have several tattoos myself, I know what I'm talking about. My first question would be, "Why do you want one?" If you plan to do it to annoy your parents- don't. It may seem tempting to show them you're mature, but it will have the opposite effect. Keep in mind, tattoos are permanent. What seems like a cool design now, you may hate in a few years. I have a couple that I regret getting. All I can say is, don't be in a rush. Take your time and think it over. Also, discuss it with your parent(s). I don't know what the law says about getting a tat at 17 in your state, but many states require parental consent. Good luck.

Do not get a tattoo.
I have had one for about a month and would give anything to get rid of it. I hope there are some great advancements in tattoo removal in the next thirty years....
Just imagine you got a tattoo but it didnt come out has you had hoped... well that happens all the time. To make things worse; there isnt a whole lot you, or anyone else can do about it! Once its on, its on.
What do you want a tattoo of? What do you have that you so badly need to "express"
Bottom line, use your words to let people know the kind of person you are, not your skin.
Please think this through and best of luck with whatever decision you make.

Any good shop will not tattoo you till you are 18 even with parental consent. If it is something you really want then I would wait till you can get it done legally in a clean shop. Research the shop and what kind of sterilization they use and also really think about the design you want, it's on your body for life. In the long run it's you're body and your decision but a tattoo is a lifetime commitment (unless you want to pay to have it removed later) and not the thing to do because you think it is "cool"

The best advice given to me was this:
Pick out the tattoo you want and hang it on your wall. Look at it every day for a year and think about if that's really what you want to look at every day for the rest of your life (unless you have it removed). Can you handle the thought of it getting droopy and wrinkley in your old age? What if it's in a place that may get stretch marks as you grow (or get pregnant), altering how it looks?
I picked out a tattoo three years ago and still haven't gotten it. A few weeks ago, I decided I didn't want it and have picked a new one. Thus the cycle begins anew, but at least I don't have a marking I regret on my body and I'm not out $100.

Where were you planning on getting this done? Do you have a friend with a tattoo gun? Can you say bad idea?
The only way to get one safely is at a reputable tattoo parlor from a trained professional, and none of them will come near you for the next 424 days.

To start - not against ink...getting on in a couple of days...but just to answer your question....
u can't yet without parental permission anyways - need to be 18...and you prob shouldn't go to a shop that's willing to "break the law" for you because they're prob lax on other stuff too (ie - safety issues) - they could lose their license over it...if they're willing to lose their license to tattoo someone illegally, you don't know what else they do or don't do in terms of rules re: tattoo studio cleanliness.

No. In most states you have to be 18. And most studios won't tattoo you if you aren't 18. Some studios in my area don't let minors in at all. Besides, if you get a tattoo now, you're more likely to regret it when you're older.

I wanted my tattoo for almost 2 years before I went ahead and got it. Not something to make an impulse decision on so give it time, especially if you're someone who changes their mind often.

Most places should require that you be 18 in order to get a tattoo.
