What bothers me the most is what is going on in Africa. Muslims converting Christians by force. Chopping people with machetes if they don't say "Allah Akbar." They burned a church recently while people where hiding inside. Christian don't let people there use condoms because its against their faith. Which is adding to the spread of Aids. As much as i don't like Christianity i don't want Africa to be another middle east. So there a lesser evil compared to Al quaida which is trying to set up extremist shops there. They tell these poor people that the source of there poverty is the evil satan USA and that Allah hates the west.
These people lack of education is a breading ground for blind hatred.
That makes me sad........

I was a missionary for my Church http://www.lds.org -- The Mormons-- in Bulgaria about 10 years ago.
We taught interested people about our faith and inviteted them to see for them selves thru prayer, fasting and contemplation if it was true. If they felt it was true we invited them to be baptized. I never told anyone they were going to hell because they would not follow my beliefs. Most people I talked to were not interested in my religon, and that was fine--I still keep in contact with them, and they are some of the best people ever. Part of my calling, in addition to proseletyzing, was to participate in community service and get involoved in the community. It was a great experience!
Not all missionaries are bad, most are just out there on their own time and dime to do a little good in the world.

I think that at worst it's cultural annihilation -- like the "assimilation" of Native Americans in America at the turn of the century -- and at best, an easy way to get fifteen minutes of fame among the other religious types. "Oh, look, _____ is on a MISSION TRIP, let's pray for him/her!"
I do however feel indebted to the missionaries for their position. More so even than my doggy.

In my religion, LDS - Mormon - there are currently about 55,000 missionaries in the world serving the Lord. We as members are also encouraged to be "missionaries" at home by spreading and sharing the gospel with those who want to hear it. I would never, and I know our missionaries are discouraged to, share the gospel with people who don't want to hear it.
I know of none of our missionaries who say "you will go to hell if you don't do what I say" that is not their message and not the purpose of them being out there.
Of course I believe in the gospel so I do not think they are spreading anything but God's message of love, peace, eternal families and blessings.

every person who thinks missionaries are attempting to 'rigidity' their ideals on others incredibly has in no way talked with them. And to assert they are 'exploiting' others is disrespecting different cultures or religions? completely untrue. each missionary i understand, which includes hundreds of them, is presented simply by fact they Love the Lord and what they understand the Lord has achieved for them and how He has blessed their lives bringing excitement and happiness in such diverse approaches. they are there simply by fact they choose to proportion that excitement and function others locate non secular success and happiness that in simple terms isn't got here across everywhere else interior the international, particularly no longer in maximum ethnic cultures. I additionally understand they are keen to examine and do take an interest interior the cultures of the individuals they are in touch with simply by fact they are construction bridges the two approaches between the cultures and perception platforms, merchandising no longer something yet solid, love and expertise between peoples. in spite of if or no longer they convert human beings or no longer, and maximum do no longer, they nonetheless help human beings advance their standards of residing by using introducing new thoughts and offering provider to fulfill actual human needs. people who've a real information of what they are incredibly doing get excitement from what they do for the main section. of path there is often a small proportion of them who could take benefit or misuse their effect and that's unlucky yet we ought to no longer permit the strikes of a few overshadow the regular solid this is being achieved by using such diverse. one concern maximum folk right this moment don't understand is how lots of our lifestyle and prosperity is equipped simply by fact of concepts preserved and taught by using the Christian Church. check out the description of the e book decrease than to work out how lots of our math, technology, artwork, regulation, language and music got here from non secular human beings. perspectives can substitute if we are going to study the actuality particularly than speculate.

They've done a lot of damage - not just inadvertantly by spreading disease, but by destroying culture. Yeah, I dislike em.
Interestingly, I googled two classmates and found two of em are missionaries now. One in New Guinea and one in Japan. I still dunno how they sleep at night tho...

I think that on balance evangelism is self-defeating. When you tell people what they should believe you're implying that what they already believe is wrong. It's like giving unwanted advice. It is insulting and arrogant.
