I took it for years. It did reduce my anxiety but it also gave me the munchies. It took my dr. awhile to find my correct dosage but it did work well for me.

I was put on Buspar in combination with an antidepressant and it did nothing for me. It was like taking candy. However, my new psychiatrist put me on a benzodiazodpine called Klonopin (brand), generic is clonazapam. He claimed that Buspar was so weak that one could take the entire prescription all at once and not be able to commit suicide! I thought that was a very odd comment coming from a doc.

Some anti-anxiety meds do not work well with extreme anxiety. The clonazapam works well for for extreme anxiety because it is a longer acting medication...12 hrs. It has it's drawbacks. Your body does become dependent on it so you can't just stop taking it. You would experience unpleasant withdrawal symptoms.

Buspar doesn't work that way and it's prescribed more often because of the dependency issues.

Talk with your doc about how you are responding to Buspar. There are other medications available that he could prescribe.

Good Luck!

I just started Buspar about two weeks ago. My son was murdered October 29 2006. I was using larazapan. Buspar has been working for me. I can get out of bed easyer, take personal hygene seriosely again and I laugh. Sometimes I feel guilty because I feel this good and it has been only 3 months since I lost my son. My heart and soul have been broken.

Yes, I used to take Buspar. I was taking Paxil, my doctor increased the dose because I was still having a lot of anxiety. Then she added Buspar, and it definitely helped. The only thing I didn't like was that I had to take it twice a day. The only side effect I remember was that I got a little bit of nasal congestion--I'm not sure if that's really a side effect of Buspar or not, but I think it was because it happend while I was taking it.

Yes, I took it for about 3 or 4 months after I was in a car accident and was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. I was anxious all the time and Buspar saved me. And it's non-addictive and a very safe drug.

NO!!!! I was given Buspar many years ago, and it did nothing--absolutely nothing! I mentioned that to a doctor more recently, and she admitted that Buspar only works when combined with another med (she would not tell me what that med is).
