As long as you don't marinate it so long that the steak goes bad from exposure, you're okay. How long it takes to get it right depends on the particular marinade and the thickness of the steak involved. In my experience, 4 or 5 hours will do it. (I like my steaks THICK!) But like I said, some marinades take longer, some don't. I have a quickie marinade that works on thin steaks in just an hour. Do some experimenting. That's how you learn!

I like to marinade for over night. So I go for at least 12 hours.
I don't think it is bad to have it go for a long time. But if you are talking about 2 or 3 days you might want to check with a local restaurant chef.
Some recipes call for 4 hours and some for over night.
Happy cooking

10 minutes - 2 days.
Don't do what I did: I forgot about the steaks and found them in the back of the fridge a few weeks later. That was too long.

Don't marinade it. If it's a decent steak just cook it as is & serve with some chips & a bernaise sauce. Oh god I'm drooling on my keyboard again!

I don't think so - but I don't usually marinate them. I just season them with salt and pepper, then grill.
