the minute i say i speak Bengali, ppl think I am from Bangladesh and I am Muslim. In fact I am from India and I am Hindu. They have no idea that India has a lot of languages. not even the Bangladeshi kids in my school know this. the same goes for the Pakistanis and Sri Lankans. Someone please explain this for all the people who do not know.

Bengali is the official language of Bangladesh, so it is just natural for people to assume that if you speak Bengali you are from Bangladesh. Bangladesh is also a highly Muslim nation, so once again, if they assume you are from Bangladesh, then they also assume you are Muslim.

Of course, India has many languages, and Bengali is also spoken there. I don't really know how else to "explain" this to people, except to say that it's true...

The upside is that the people you talk to know about Bangladesh (which many Americans do not!)

Americans are stupid and assume the simplest thing because it doesn't hurt their brains.
