If nothing else throw him out, demand payment, restitution, replacement of pills, have him explain to the dr. that he took him, not you, so that you can get more. What he did was rude and heartless.

If he wanted to try 1 he could have asked. (I do not condone casual drug use. My point is that he could have just come right out and asked you, rather than stealing them like some low-life junky.) Whether he took a couple for a casual drug night of fun, it was very inconsiderate of him to forego the real pain you were in so he could have some fun.
If he took 1 or 2, I would read him the riot act. I would tell him that he had no right; that what he did was stealing, and that if he wants to be a no-good, lying, junky thief, he can find some place else to live.
If he took more than a few pills, at this point I wouldn't even say a word to him. I'd just start looking for another roommate. Then when it's time for him to go, tell him on the day he leaves why you don't want him there anymore. Tell him he's a lying, thieving junky and you won't tolerate it, and he can just get the hell out.
If he took the whole bottle, I WOULD call the police. Call them and fill out a report. As another person answering said, you might need to show the police report as proof in case you start having serious pain and need a refill, as your doctor might think that you yourself are drug seeking.
It will be his word against yours, so chances are nothing will happen to him (unless they find the drugs on his person or he openly admits it to the cop then he'll be charged with possession of a controlled substance) but you'll at least have a police report to show to your doctor. At this point there's no turning back and you will have to find someone else to move in.
You'll have to figure out for yourself what feels right for you. There are other factors involved, like who owns the house? Do you live in an apartment or a house? Is his name of the lease? Does he own the property? Is it a dorm, etc... If he owns the house, you may not want to contact the police unless you want to start packing and moving tomorrow. If his name is on the lease, you can provide the apartment complex with a copy of the police report and have them remove him. You're goign to have to sit and think of all the different variables and make the decision that's best for you.
Anywho, I hope your knee feels better. Take care.

I would report so you will have a Police record to take to the Pharmacy. You never know if your knee will become infected later and hurt. I had surgery on my elbow in June and I'm now having bad pain when it is cold. And I have to work.

Are you sure that this is all he's taken from you? And are you sure that he hasn't done this to someone else?
If you roommate is doing this even on a recreational basis, thee's something very, very wrong.
If you're talking roommate as in college, speak with someone at the student health clinic about your concerns. They won't be able to answer you at all, but you'll be alerting them to a potential problem.
If not, do the same with the police.

If your room mate stole your meds what other things has he been stealing? I'd get another room mate or a safe to lock away your valuables. How can you trust this guy? Calling the cops is your decision. If your considering doing that you really need to have proof. I'm sure he wouldn't confess to the cops that he took the pills. Get rid of him.....

If your roommate only took a few, I don't think I would report it. Just warn him. And keep your medicine locked up or with you!

I personally would not bother reporting this incident to the police as i don't believe it to be a criminal offence to take pain killers prescribed to you or not, what do you want to achieve by reporting it? do you simply want an apology? does your rommie have an underlying dependency on pain killers? if the answer is yes he needs help not police involvement. please in future keep your medication with you or locked up as i believe this to be your responsibility imagine if a child had gotten there hand on them!!
