Most chest freezers have a light in the lid, but upright freezers have full-sized pull out drawers so there is nowhere for a light. Even if there were a light at the top it couldn't light up the lower drawers. Manufacturers please note - this could be a future selling point!

Because the freezer is right in front of your face when you open it, you don't need lights as badly to see into it. Then the lower temperature and smaller space makes it so theres no bulb.

There is a light in my freezer...well, actually it's outside but only comes on when you open the door. It shines down from the slight overhang at the top.

When glass is cold/frozen then suddenly heated up guess what it shatters. bulbs heat up very quickly. so they would shatter every time you open the door/switch the bulb on. that's why the don't have the inside freezers

Because when you wake up hungry in the middle of the night the last thing you need to be doing is defrosting stuff. It steers you towards the stuff you can eat NOW and not in TEN MINUTES!!
