I don't think you will ever get a truthful answer to that. The ones who are Xians out of fear will never admit to it. I think there are plenty who are Xians for that reason.

Low, in my experience, but...
When I was having more difficulty with Christianity I enquired, individually, of those I felt I could trust at the church I was then attending (evangelical, bible believing).
And I discovered about a third of them were not there because they feared hell, or because they believed, but because they wanted to BELONG. The sense of support, of community, of mutual affection and respect was such that they were prepared to do and say whatever was required in order to stay within the community.
Except that it wasn't put that way. It was put that the belonging was important, and the actual words didn't matter much, except for saying the right sort of thing.

Me, I found I couldn't do that.

Well especially during the tent revival period of 20th Century Christendom there was a larger percent of Christians who became followers due to the fear of Hell.

Intially there is nothing wrong with this. However, hopefully these Christians will grow and mature in their faith. Because Faith soley based on this fear is not strong nor will it last.

Its just like at first a child obeys their parents because of a fear/respect of their parents. They know that the parents will punish them if they do not do as they are told. Yet you want your child to come to a point that they simply obey their parents beacuse they love their parents.

I am afraid of hell, life is hard enough day to day. why would i want my eternity to be even worse. Also hell is not the big party zone like many think it may be, it is complete darkness, weeping, regret, and torment, complete abscence of all good that comes from god. i actually know more people that get drawn toward the love of god than the fear of hell though.

The bible teaches that "hell" is *NOT* a fiery place of torment, but is actually the common grave of mankind.

There is no suffering in "hell", or the grave. Sometime after the resurrection, death and "hell" will themselves be destroyed.

(Ecclesiastes 9:5) For the living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all

(Ecclesiastes 9:10) there is no work nor devising nor knowledge nor wisdom in Sheol ["hell"]

(Revelation 20:14) And death and Hades ["hell"] were hurled into the lake of fire

I expect it is a fairly high percentage. One of the reasons that the concept of missionaries is infuriating to me. Those people go to Nepal and tell others that if they don't believe what they tell them to believe than they are going to hell. One big disgusting LIE!

Following the religion out of fear does not make someone a Christian.
