My father emailed me an article in the Italian paper about a recently-deceased rider who PURPOSELY finished last in several Tours. He would stop, go for lunch, have a nap, hide in a ditch and then ride in in last place.

This was back in the early days of the Tour but I'm wondering if anyone knows his name. I think he was Italian.

The term your talking about is Lanterne Rouge or The red lantern Still considered an honour by many fanatics. The new rules make it even more of a challenge to FINISH in last place without being eliminated.

There used to be a jersey awarded for it (red). This was withdrawn because many saw it as a mark of shame and would withdrawn rather than receive it. Others would abuse its intention in the manner you have stated.

The rider finishing last can often pick up endorsements. Cashing in on never say die or the most hours in the tour.

Unfortunately I can't find a listing anywhere. Hopefully this will give you a new lead.

Yeah I remember reading about that guy. He was probably the last (only) one. Like the others said, these days the time limits prevent that, and besides it's so hard to get chosen for a Tour team, nodoby really wants to be last anymore, it means you might not get to ride next year.

There is a time limit in today's Tour and if you go behind you are pulled over.

Technically ther are many that don't finish and they are all behind the last one to finish.
