they are the best, they see whats wrong with your skin [too much oil, stress, etc] and can prescribe meds, and cremes. as long as you have healthcare it wont cost anything

I had a severe acne problem when I was in my teens. My parents sent me to a few dermatologists but, in my case, nothing they did helped me. I had lotions, pills, light treatment, diet changes and topical steroids - to name a few.

I'm not sure how much it all cost because I was a kid and my parents never told me. I do know that they did have some insurance benefits that helped to pay some of the bills.

When I got out on my own, I never consulted a dermatologist again becuase I'd been frustrated when I was a kid and didn't have good insurance to pay for the visits as an adult.

Now, many, many years later, my acne has cleared up since I went on birth control pills (go figure).

I'm not saying that a dermatologist won't work for you, I'm just saying that everyone is different and it may take a while to find the correct treatment that works for you. Also, they've developed new methods and treatments since I was your age.

I don't think it's a waste of your time to go and see if they can help you. If they can't, at least you tried. Make sure you get referrals for a good dermatologist who will listen to you and not just rush you in and out.

If you go to a dermatologist, they will prescribe treatments that are not available over the counter. They will likely give you an information sheet that describes the types of skin and hair care products that can cause acne.
They will probably start with antibiotics. They will start with the least expensive and lowest side effect products and if that doesn't work, progress to more expensive and/or difficult products.
Good insurance companies cover acne treatment.
Some dermatologists will actually treat the blemishes via extraction to get rid the redness & swelling. This is not likely covered by insurance, but can clear your skin rapidly.
The cost varies, but is usually in line with a visit to any other physician.

Its worth it if you go to a good one! I had acne for years and years. Like you said, nothing worked. For me, the answer was a medicine called Accutane. Probably, though, a derm will try a couple of other things first....most likely some prescription ointments and stuff and possibly antibiotics. I will say that if what you call "acne" is one or two bumps at a time, Accutane is not worth it...it makes your skin extremely dry, sore, and brittle while you are on it and for a good bit after (treatment lasts 6 months if i remember correctly). However, I had bad cystic acne (the kind where you get the really painful hard lumps) and it cleared it up beautifully! I actually get complemented on my skin for once in my life. I have been off of it for around 4 years now, and all I have to do is just wash with something like neutrogena and use an oil control moisturizer. Some people have to do a follow up treatment, but the one time through worked for me. As far as cost, check with your parents....some insurance will cover at least some of dermatology appointments and meds.

Try Transfer Factor and do not expect immediate results, is a natural product that will help you little by little. My cousin had acne all his life and now he is acne free after 5 months. You need also antioxidants, and you can look through the page on link below and you will find them too. The product works by increasing your immune system and that would help you with the stress and with the skin problem. The skin is the largest organ of your body yet the most vulnerable since it cannot defend it self. You will need to get more than two capsules a day. The name of the antioxidants are "Choice 50," and "pbgs+." You can buy them through the Internet.

I took my teenager to his regular doctor (not a dermatologist) and they prescribed some type of topical cream that REALLY worked (none of the over the counter stuff had worked). I really don’t know how much the actual bill was because we just pay a flat co-payment and our insurance pays the rest. But if you call the doctor’s office, they should be able to give you an estimate for the visit.

I was plagued with acne for years...finally I went to the doctor and he put me on antibiotics and and antibiotic pad for my face. I changed my bad habits (using hand me down makeup, sharing makeup, using old makeup, cleaning to harshly) bought a good daily moisturizer. after 2 refills of meds I never had a problem again. Now If I do get a blemish it's a rare occurance...like when I'm overtired and over stress my skin, or when I let my face gets dirty and I don't wash it right away.

So yes! it's a great idea!
