John Campbell, 9th Duke of Argyll used the title "Marquis of Lorne." That might be one place to start.

I don't know why a gun should have Marquis of Lorn on it, but it is the name of a pub (albeit with an 'e' added) that serves excellent food in Dorset. If you go to www.marquisoflorne.com there is a brief history of the origin of the name.Maybe you have a reaal historical item there. Interesting.

If this was indeed a possesion of a member of the nobility, chances are very good that not only is it of very high quality, but likely worth enough to warrant an appraisal. you might go to
www.gregmartinauctions.com and check out his links to firearm apraisers. You might wanna know the value so you can list it on your homeowners policy.

A detailed description of the firearm would be useful. Rifle? Pistol? Revolver?
