Are you sure it was white? custard is made with egg yolks milk and sugar, it may have been a white sauce, which would be made with butter, milk/cream and sugar and a thickening agent i.e cornflour.

Grandma Ada's Recipe for Custard Sauce
Ingredients
1-teaspoon vanilla
2 cups milk
2 eggs
½ cup sugar

Directions
Heat the milk. Beat the eggs and sugar until they are thick and pale yellow. Slowly add the hot milk stirring constantly. Cook over very low heat until the custard reaches 175 - 180 degrees Fahrenheit or is slightly thickened. The custard should leave a thick coating on the back of a spoon. Do not boil. Remove from heat, pour into a bowl, cool, and cover and refrigerate until ready to use. Makes approximately two cups.
